Backridge Observatory is a homemade fiberglassed 15ft domed structure located on Backridge Mountain near Spruce Knob, West Virginia the highest peak in the state. A satellite view shows it to be in one of the best dark sky sites in the eastern USA. It was built the summer of 2006 at The Mountain Institute, a non-profit facility now called Experience Learning where I previously provided volunteer astronomy outreach for several years . The observatory houses a homemade, including the mirror, 16" f5 Newtonian telescope with a carbon fiber tube and a Baader MPCC coma corrector. It is fully automated using Home Dome controls and motors. It is solar powered using golf cart batteries and has fiberoptic internet service. I wrote an article for my astronomy club describing the construction.
